“NBA Free Agency 2025: Live Coverage, Latest Buzz & Rumors — LeBron James Opts In with Lakers!”
With the 2024-25 NBA season and draft now in the books, the spotlight shifts squarely to free agency. After the Oklahoma City Thunder cemented their dominance, the rest of the league is scrambling to make moves in hopes of knocking them off the throne.
Major changes are already underway. The Phoenix Suns shook the league by trading superstar Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, and the No. 10 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft (Khaman Maluach). Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics have initiated a roster shakeup of their own, sending Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers and Kristaps Porziņģis to the Atlanta Hawks.
In another key development, LeBron James has reportedly picked up his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season, expressing his desire to contend for another championship as the Lakers look to balance winning now with building for the future.
Other big names possibly hitting the market include James Harden, Julius Randle, Myles Turner, and Jonathan Kuminga. (Check out Yahoo Sports’ NBA free agent big board for the full list.)
Teams can now begin negotiating with their own impending free agents. Starting June 30 at 6 p.m. ET, they can also begin talks with free agents from other teams, with signings becoming official on July 6 at 12:01 p.m. ET.
LeBron James opts into $52.6M player option with Lakers
As expected, LeBron James is staying in Los Angeles, exercising his $52.6 million option for the 2025-26 season, according to his agent Rich Paul via ESPN’s Shams Charania. It will mark James’ eighth season with the Lakers — his longest stint with any team — and an unprecedented 23rd straight NBA season.
Last season, James averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game while shooting 38% from three-point range. He played 70 games, averaging 35 minutes per night.
Julius Randle, meanwhile, impressed in his first season with Minnesota, averaging 18.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 4.7 assists while hitting 34% from deep on 314 attempts. The Timberwolves landed Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and a first-rounder in a blockbuster trade that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the Knicks.
Randle is set to enter his 12th NBA season, having previously played for the Lakers, Pelicans, and Knicks, with career averages of 19 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.
